We were notified today that introduction of the new ASP Ultra Handcuffs has been tabled indefinitely. We saw them for the first time at the SHOT Show in January, 2011. We put a large quantity on order and the first shipment were supposed to be in October or November 2011. We do not currently know if they will ever be made. I think that the new Ultra Handcuffs are an excellent design and hope they are eventually released.

There has been a lot of discussion recently about whether the TSA permits handcuffs on airplanes. Handcuffs are not addressed specifically in the prohibited items list. The TSA blog has addressed the issue and here is their thinking: "Some assumed handcuffs were prohibited, and were very surprised to find out they’re not. Why not, you might ask? They’re not a threat. You can’t do any real damage with a pair of handcuffs and if you really wanted to tie someone’s hands behind their back, there are many other ways you could do it." Thompson Handcuffs, formerly Hiatt-Thompson Corporation, has been acquired by Combined Systems. Combined Systems is a leading maker of chemical and impact munitions including aerosols, flash-bangs, and accessories. Thompson Handcuffs will continue to operate in Chicago with current management. Hiatt-Thompson was previously the exclusive distributor for Hiatt Handcuffs in North America. Hiatt was acquired by Armor Holdings, which was then acquired by BAE Systems. Hiatt-Thompson was the first company to develop colored handcuffs. They also developed the Blue Box handcuff cover and magnetic training keys. Since becoming completely unrelated to Hiatt and BAE Systems, Thompson Handcuffs has developed their own complete line of handcuffs and leg irons that closely resemble the original Hiatt models.

Shutter Island Handcuffs

Shutter Island recently came out on DVD and I finally saw the movie. We sold them a lot of restraints for the film. It is set in the 1950s in an institution for the criminally insane. They used a number of Darby handcuffs in the boat over to the island. The inmates working in the gardens are wearing American L100 leg irons and Peerless Model 703 leg irons. They used custom waist restraints with Humane Restraint Model BT48 leather waist belts and custom long chain Peerless Model 700 handcuffs with 23" chains. Items that they bought but did not make the final cut include Humane Restraint Strait Jackets, Humane Restraint Model ML-200 Locking Leather Mitts, and Humane Restraint Locking Leather Muffs.

Formerly Hiatt 2010s, Safariland's 8112-1-31 standard chain style handcuffs have received NIJ certification.

Safariland has announced that its two most popular models of nickel-finished handcuffs have passed the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) 0307.01 Standard.

Required by many law enforcement agencies, the NIJ 0307.01 standard establishes requirements and methods of testing metallic handcuffs. The tests include weight and dimensional testing, mechanical strength, salt spray corrosion resistance and cheek plate tamper resistance. Based on a pass/fail system, the Safariland Model 8112-1-31 standard chain style and the Model 8122-1-31 standard hinge cuffs passed all tests.

The Safariland handcuff models 8112 and 8122 are designed to meet the needs of the law enforcement personnel through a variety of unique features. All handcuffs include a back-loading capability that facilitates fast application, and three independent retaining bars with six teeth on each that make the cuffs extremely difficult to shim.

The Safariland handcuffs also have a positive swing-through action, which helps keep the swing arm balanced and centered. Further, the use of a leaf spring instead of a coil spring foils a suspect's effort to overcome the handcuff's double lock mechanism. These distinctive features ensure that the handcuffs can be applied with speed and confidence to minimize the risk of injury to both the officer and the suspect.

Thompson Handcuffs has introduced their new Tri-Max Handcuffs. The Tri-Max addresses recent concerns about the vulnerability of handcuffs to shimming. Very similar to Yuil handcuffs from Korea, The Tri-Max uses 2 split rows of teeth on the swinging bow. This allows a shim guard at the center of the split pawls to run through the center gap in the bow. While the shim guard is stationary in the Yuil handcuffs, the Tri-max shim guard floats somewhat with the pawls. This design allows the handcuffs to be opened with a standard key rather than a non-standard split bit key like Yuil uses. The problem with a big key is that it gives you a lot of leverage. It is easy to break the tip. The tip is hardened stainless steel like all other Zak Tool keys, but the big handle provides enough leverage to bend it easily. United Airlines diverted a flight bound to London after an incoherent and disruptive passenger, apparently woozy from a combination of pills, alcohol and lavatory hand soap, allegedly tried to bite a flight attendant in the leg.Galina Rusanova, a British citizen, was charged with interference with a flight crew and assault for disrupting United flight 934 from Los Angeles to London Heathrow Airport on April 29, forcing the plane to land in Maine. She could face up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.In a Monday hearing before a U.S. District Court in Bangor, Maine, Rusanova waived her right to a detention hearing and agreed to be detained pending trial.Rusanova is described by the British press as a Russian-born artist, actress and author who rubs elbows with the rich and famous. She was returning home to the United Kingdom after traveling to California to visit a man she had met over the Internet, according to court documents.
"Obviously, it's a case that's gathered some attention," said Matthew Erickson, her attorney. "What wasn't disclosed through the affidavit is that Ms. Rusanova is a very intelligent, charming woman. This comes as a shock to her."The outrageous behavior that Rusanova apparently exhibited during the flight is completely out of character, added Erickson. "Her mistake was to mix prescription drugs with alcohol. After that, all bets were off."Drunken and unruly passengers have been an unpleasant fact of life for flight attendants for as long as airlines have served alcohol. But today's crews are better equipped to deal with poor behavior than their predecessors, and far less likely to tolerate it, said aviation consultant Robert Mann.Airline crews are equipped with tools like plastic handcuffs to restrain out-of-control passengers and trained to quickly land a plane if that person becomes violent."Whenever there's an incident that involves physical abuse or threats to anyone on board, it's taken very seriously," said Robin Urbanski, spokeswoman for Chicago-based United. She added that such incidents are rare.Fearful of flying, Rusanova had taken four sleeping pills and consumed two or three bottles of red wine to calm her nerves, according to a statement she made to FBI special agent James McCarty.About three hours into the flight, a United flight attendant said she found Rusanova with her feet on her in-flight food tray, kicking the seat in front of her. Rusanova, who appeared to be very intoxicated according to a court filing, requested more wine and then fell asleep.A short time later, the same United crew member was told by passengers that Rusanova was incoherent and bothering fellow travelers.As she approached, she saw Rusanova "drink a bottle of liquid soap that she had apparently removed from the bathroom," according to the court document.A melee ensued as flight attendants tried to subdue Rusanova and move her to a flight crew member's seat at the rear of the cabin, where she was eventually handcuffed.During that process Rusanova allegedly threw punches, kicked and pushed crew members. At one point, she fell to the floor of the galley in the rear of the aircraft and began "snapping like a dog," trying to bite a flight attendant's leg, according to the filing.Rusanova told McCarty, the FBI agent, that she remembered little about the flight, aside from fighting with a flight attendant over seating and the quality of United's red wine."She added that what she did was terrible and she feels embarrassed," McCarty said in an affidavit to the court. American Handcuff Company Items from Ray's Sport Shop

Ray's Sport Shop in North Plainfield, NJ recently went out of business and Handcuff Warehouse bought all of their remaining handcuff stock. We got a bunch of S&W, Peerless, and Hiatt stuff, but the real treasure was a number of old American Handcuff Company items. American went out of business years ago (bought by ASP in 2003). We got some N200 oversized handcuffs, Model L-300 auto restraints, standard Model N-105, L-100 leg irons, 2 pairs of N-400 swivel hinged handcuffs, and a bunch of waist chains. Ray's Sport Shop opened in 1947 and Ray is now 92 years old. He tried to sell the company since the 1990s, but couldn't find a buyer for the whole business that included an extensive store with police equipment, gun range, gun shop, and hunting & fishing gear. A car dealer next door bought the property and will tear down the buildings to expand their lot. Ray's was a competitor of ours, but I was sorry they closed after I heard the compelling story of their business.

Hiatt-Thompson is changing their name to Thompson Handcuffs and Restraints to reflect their independent status. Their new logo will include the same red triangle with the H and T reversed.

Hiatt-Thompson Corporation was previously the exclusive distributor for English company Hiatt Handcuffs in North America. Hiatt was purchased by Armor Holdings, which was then purchased by BAE Systems. BAE closed the factory in England and discontinued the Hiatt name. They are now making the Hiatt handcuffs in New Hampshire under the Safariland name.

Thompson Handcuffs and Restraints is no longer affiliated with BAE and now makes their own line of popular colored handcuffs and leg irons as well as a complete line of handcuffs that are very similiar to the Hiatt line. They also make the Blue Box and magnetic training keys. The owners, Chuck and Dawn Thompson, are very entrepreneurial and are always coming up with something new. Look for them to come out with more innovative products soon.

We got our second shipment of the new Safariland handcuffs today. The first shipment that we got a couple weeks ago was the Safariland oversized chain black handcuffs. This is the new version of the Hiatt Model 2005.

The new Safariland oversized chain nickel handcuffs are the new version of the Hiatt Model 2003.

The new Safariland oversized hinged black handcuffs are the new version of the Hiatt Model 2055.

The new Safariland oversized hinged nickel handcuffs are the new version of the Hiatt Model 2054.

Training Leg Irons

We have gotten a lot of requests for training leg irons recently. There were none on the market, so we made our own.

Training leg irons have permanently attached low profile steel dials which open the cuffs quickly for efficient training. The face of the dial provides an illustration indicating the direction to turn to open the cuff. Additionally, the double lock feature of the cuffs is fully functional.

ASP Triple Pawl Hinged Handcuffs

New from ASP: hinged stainless steel handcuffs with three part pawl for higher security. The pawl is the part that engages the teeth of the swinging bow of the handcuff. Making it with 3 independently operating sections makes the handcuffs more resistant to shimming. ASP calls them European style. Hiatt (now Safariland) has been using this feature for years and triple pawls are required by some European agencies. Green double locks differentiate these from standard ASP handcuffs. They use standard keys and operate just like other ASP handcuffs.

Safariland Double Cuffs / Monadnock Double Cuffs in New Colors

Monadnock Double Cuffs are now under under the Safariland umbrella and are called Safariland Double Cuffs. They are now available in 10 colors. The newest colors are tan, olive drab, and lime green. The used to have only a dark green, but that color is discontinued. We have all colors in stock.
